SA CHAMP WINS DIS-CHEM RIDE FOR SIGHT |
||||||||
The Elite men’s group went out very fast and the peloton stayed together for the first 20 kilometres. James Louter took a brief lead and opened up a 35 second gap. The peloton soon closed the gap. A break away group with representatives from the House of Paints, DEM, MTN and EMG teams managed to create a gap of almost a minute. At the big hills of Heidelberg the peloton again closed the gap with MTN dominating the bunch. House of Paints controlled the last 2km of the race, setting up the race for their sprinter Dean Edwards. With the finish in sight MTN moved in and a fast sprint finish saw Christoff van Heerden take line honours from his team mate Juan van Heerden in an excellent time of 2:37:18. Van Heerden, fresh from his win at the SA Champs, thanked the organisers for an excellent event and his team for a magnificent ride. Ladies winner Jennie Stenerhag, the current Swedish ladies champ, took the honours in the ladies event. Riding without the support of a team, she had to work extremely hard to win. The second lady home was Carla Swart . All proceeds from the event go directly to Retina South Africa’s research project to fight Blindness caused by Retinal conditions such as Macular Degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa.
